Navalprogetti, coordinator of the European sHYpS (Sustainable Hydrogen Powered Shipping) Project, is pleased to announce the achievement of another important milestone in the development of innovative liquid hydrogen technologies for the maritime sector.
As part of Work Package 6 – “LH2 Storage Ship Integration, Testing and Demonstrator” – installation activities have officially commenced at the dedicated on-land testing facility located in Staranzano (Gorizia, Italy), marking a significant step forward toward the validation of the project’s hydrogen storage and handling solutions.
The work currently underway is being carried out under the technical supervision of project partners CENERGY Srl and Chart Industries, two key contributors to the development and implementation of the liquid hydrogen infrastructure that will support the testing campaign.
The installation phase includes the integration of auxiliary systems that will operate alongside the liquid hydrogen storage tank and the tank connection space prototypes. These systems are essential for ensuring the safe management, monitoring, control and operational validation of the entire hydrogen storage architecture developed within the project.

The Staranzano test facility represents a fundamental component of the sHYpS demonstration strategy. Before any future onboard implementation, the complete hydrogen system must undergo extensive testing in a controlled environment, allowing project partners to verify system performance, operational reliability and compliance with the highest safety standards required for maritime applications.
During the coming months, additional equipment and supporting infrastructure will be progressively installed and commissioned. This work will culminate in the delivery and integration of the empty liquid hydrogen tank, enabling the execution of a comprehensive safety testing programme designed to validate the behaviour of the system under different operating conditions.
The on-land testing campaign will provide invaluable data for the subsequent phases of the project, supporting the assessment of innovative solutions for liquid hydrogen storage and contributing to the development of future zero-emission vessels powered by hydrogen.
As the maritime industry faces increasingly ambitious decarbonisation targets, projects such as sHYpS play a crucial role in accelerating the adoption of clean energy technologies. By advancing the integration of liquid hydrogen systems into ship design and operations, the project aims to contribute to a safer, more sustainable and energy-efficient future for maritime transport.
